A Reply From A Tyger

In the forest,
In the night,
In the heart,
A being of fright.

Of what I come
And of what I be
Is known not to you
Nor of me.

Of the hammer
And of the chain
Brought me about?
Brought the lamb’s bane?

Who can say
What made night
Who made me?
But in that ghoulish fright

Who made day?

Without the day
Can there be night?
With out happiness
Can there be fright?

Did he
Who made the lamb
Create this beast
Utter this damn?

Or did he made
A mould of stripe
And created it
Of pure joy and delight

Of innocence and pure
Next to the lamb
Not of a beast
Nor not of a damn

But who is to say
It is not so
Corruption of lamb
Turned to this woe?

Who is to say
He who made the lamb
Sent the tears
Upon which earth swam

He who made the lamb
He who made me
One and the same?
Can they agree?

Or is the tyger
But a damn?
